CORSIA DOCUMENT UPDATE: CORSIA Default Life Cycle Emissions Values for CORSIA Eligible Fuels-Sixth Edition

The ICAO Council has approved significant updates to the CORSIA Default Life Cycle Emissions Values for CORSIA Eligible Fuels, refining the sustainability framework for aviation. These amendments are pivotal for ensuring compliance with Annex 16, Volume IV, of ICAO’s environmental protection standards.

Key Updates:

  1. Expanded Feedstocks:
    • Inclusion of new pathways such as molasses (ATJ), jatropha (HEFA), and mixed animal fats.
    • Default Induced Land Use Change (ILUC) values for various cellulosic feedstocks, including poplar and switchgrass, highlight ICAO’s focus on sustainable land use.
  2. Updated Default Core LCA Values:
    • Pathways for SAF from beef tallow, poultry fat, and non-standard coconuts have been added.
    • Enhanced guidance for co-processed fuels clarifies calculations for life cycle emissions.
  3. Structural Revisions:
    • Simplified documentation for easier application by operators and states.

Implications:
These updates reflect ICAO’s commitment to decarbonizing aviation by providing clear methodologies for life cycle emissions calculations, default values, and feedstock specifications. They are critical for reducing global aviation emissions and promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
