The ICAO Council has approved updates to three critical documents underpinning the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), strengthening the framework for eligible fuels. Notable changes include the addition of a new Sustainability Certification Scheme and new CORSIA-approved feedstocks.
Key Updates:
- Third Edition of CORSIA Approved Sustainability Certification Schemes Document:
- Reflects the inclusion of ClassNK as a newly approved Sustainability Certification Scheme.
- Supports the implementation of Annex 16, Volume IV – Environmental Protection.
- Approved Certification Schemes:
- ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) – Approved June 2023.
- RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) – Approved June 2023.
- ClassNK – Approved October 2024, focusing on economic operators aligned with Chapter 2 of the CORSIA Sustainability Criteria.
Purpose: These certifications ensure compliance with CORSIA’s sustainability criteria, verifying the life cycle emissions calculations for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
These updates reinforce ICAO’s commitment to reducing aviation emissions and promoting sustainable fuel use.
This milestone demonstrates ICAO’s ongoing effort to align the aviation industry with global sustainability objectives, paving the way for cleaner skies.
